Acupuncture works on the principle that there is an interconnecting system of channels or meridians in the body similar to the cardiovascular system. Instead of carrying blood, however, these energy channels carry qi (pronounced chi), which has been recognised in China for thousands of years and recently acknowledged in the West. Disease or disharmony begins when the body’s qi becomes affected.

This may be by external factors such as cold and damp, or by internal factors relating to negative emotions. This causes the body’s qi to become unbalanced resulting in either stagnation or deficiency of qi, usually affecting a particular channel. If this is allowed to persist the person will eventually begin to show the signs and symptoms of dis-ease.
